Symptoms / Scoliosis

Scoliosis can affect how your spine moves and handles load.

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that can vary widely from person to person. Some people have few symptoms, while others notice stiffness, muscle fatigue, uneven movement or recurring back discomfort. At The Reserve Chiropractic & HBOT in Newcastle, Oklahoma, we focus on how your spine is moving and functioning, not just the curve itself.

Scoliosis Basics

Scoliosis is a spinal pattern, not automatically a pain diagnosis.

The goal is not to promise to straighten the spine. It is to understand how the curve may be affecting movement, joint mobility, muscle tension and day-to-day function.

Some people with scoliosis have no pain at all. Others notice one-sided tightness, muscle fatigue, stiffness after sitting or standing, or recurring discomfort in the back or shoulders. Symptoms can depend on curve location, age, activity level and how the body is adapting.

A careful exam can help determine whether chiropractic care may be useful for mobility, comfort and movement quality, and whether any separate disc or nerve issue also needs to be addressed.

Common Contributors

What can influence scoliosis symptoms?

These are common possibilities, not a diagnosis. Your exam helps narrow down what is most relevant to your symptoms.

01

Joint irritation

The spinal curve can change how joints share load and how different areas of the spine move during daily activity.

02

Muscle tension

Muscles on each side of the spine may work differently to stabilize the body, which can contribute to tension or fatigue.

03

Disc involvement

Restricted motion in the spine, ribs, pelvis or hips can make everyday movement feel less balanced or efficient.

04

Nerve irritation

Asymmetry in posture or movement can place different demands on the shoulders, hips and surrounding soft tissues.

05

Movement limitations

Growth, activity level, deconditioning and long periods in one position can all influence how scoliosis feels over time.

06

Work + lifestyle stress

Separate issues such as disc irritation, arthritis or nerve symptoms can exist alongside scoliosis and may contribute more to pain than the curve itself.

Care Options

What kind of care may help?

Treatment depends on what your exam shows. We keep the plan focused on what makes sense for your presentation rather than automatically putting everyone through the same protocol.

Chiropractic Care

For joint motion, mobility and mechanical back pain.

Chiropractic care may be appropriate for some people with scoliosis when restricted joint motion, muscle tension or movement limitations are contributing to discomfort. Care may include chiropractic adjustments, mobility work and practical guidance focused on comfort and function.

Spinal Decompression

Only relevant if a separate disc or nerve problem is present.

Spinal decompression is not a treatment for scoliosis itself. It may only become relevant when a person with scoliosis also has a separate disc-related problem or nerve irritation that could benefit from decompression.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Not a treatment for scoliosis itself.

HBOT is not a treatment for scoliosis. It may be used for other medically appropriate indications, but it should not be presented as a way to change or correct a spinal curve.

Know When To Seek Medical Care

Some scoliosis-related symptoms need prompt medical evaluation.

Chiropractic care is not appropriate for every situation. Seek medical evaluation if scoliosis is accompanied by serious, rapidly changing or neurologic symptoms.

  • New loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Progressive numbness or weakness
  • Difficulty walking or loss of coordination
  • Severe or rapidly worsening pain
  • Back pain with fever or unexplained illness
  • Breathing difficulty or significant chest symptoms

Scoliosis FAQ

A few common questions.

Chiropractic care may help some people with scoliosis by addressing joint mobility, muscle tension and movement comfort. It is important to be clear that chiropractic care does not promise to eliminate or permanently straighten a scoliosis curve.

Spinal decompression does not treat scoliosis itself. It may only be considered if a separate disc-related problem or nerve irritation is also present.

Imaging is commonly used to evaluate and measure scoliosis curves. Dr. Conner can review whether updated X-rays or referral may be appropriate based on your history, age, symptoms and previous imaging.

Scoliosis does not always cause pain, but some people experience muscle fatigue, stiffness or mechanical back discomfort. Pain can also come from other conditions that exist alongside the curve.
