Knee pain can make walking, stairs and everyday movement uncomfortable.
Knee pain can come from joint irritation, overuse, muscle imbalance, altered movement, injury or stress coming from the hip or ankle. At The Reserve Chiropractic & HBOT in Newcastle, Oklahoma, we start by figuring out what may be contributing before recommending care.
Start with a clear first step.
Consultation, careful examination, any needed X-rays, one complete chiropractic treatment and recommendations to get you well.
Knee pain can come from the joint itself or from how the hip, ankle and surrounding muscles are working.
The goal is to understand whether the pain is related to joint irritation, movement mechanics, surrounding muscles and tendons or a recent injury.
Some people notice aching after walking or exercise. Others feel stiffness, swelling, clicking, catching or pain with stairs, squatting, kneeling or getting up from a chair. The pattern can help narrow down what may be involved.
A careful exam can help determine whether chiropractic care, mobility work or movement changes may be appropriate and whether imaging or referral should be considered.
What may be behind your knee pain?
These are common possibilities, not a diagnosis. Your exam helps narrow down what is most relevant to your symptoms.
Joint irritation
The knee joint can become irritated after overuse, impact, repetitive loading or a sudden increase in activity.
Muscle tension
Muscles and tendons around the knee can become overworked or irritated, especially with running, squatting, jumping or repetitive activity.
Disc involvement
Hip weakness or restricted hip motion can change how force travels through the knee during walking, stairs and exercise.
Nerve irritation
Ankle or foot mechanics can also change how the knee tracks and handles load during movement.
Movement limitations
Running volume, repetitive work, deconditioning, old injuries and changes in activity can all influence how the knee feels.
Work + lifestyle stress
Because knee pain can have several sources, it is important to distinguish a mechanical movement issue from a significant ligament, meniscus, fracture or inflammatory problem.
What kind of care may help?
Treatment depends on what your exam shows. We keep the plan focused on what makes sense for your presentation rather than automatically putting everyone through the same protocol.
Some knee pain needs prompt medical evaluation.
Chiropractic care is not appropriate for every situation. Seek prompt medical attention if knee pain is accompanied by serious injury, major swelling or signs of infection.
- Severe pain or deformity after a fall or impact
- Inability to bear weight after an injury
- Rapid swelling or a knee that suddenly gives way
- Fever with a hot, red or very swollen knee
- A locked knee that cannot fully bend or straighten
- Progressive numbness, weakness or unusual symptoms below the knee

A few common questions.
Chiropractic care may help some people with knee pain when joint mobility, hip or ankle mechanics, muscle tension or movement patterns are contributing. The first step is determining what appears to be driving the pain.
Spinal decompression is not used for routine knee pain. It may only be relevant when pain near the knee is actually being referred from a lumbar disc or irritated nerve.
Not everyone with knee pain needs imaging. Dr. Conner can determine whether X-rays, advanced imaging or referral may be appropriate based on your history, exam and whether there was a significant injury.
The hip, knee and ankle work together during walking, stairs and exercise. If motion or strength changes at the hip or ankle, the knee may absorb more stress and become irritated over time.
You do not have to guess what kind of care you need.
Start with an evaluation. We can help you understand what may be contributing to your knee pain and whether chiropractic care or another next step makes sense.
