Symptoms / Leg Pain

Leg pain can make walking, standing and sleeping uncomfortable.

Leg pain can come from muscles, joints, nerves, overuse, injury or pain referred from the low back. At The Reserve Chiropractic & HBOT in Newcastle, Oklahoma, we start by figuring out whether symptoms are local to the leg or connected to the spine before recommending care.

Leg Pain Basics

Leg pain can come from the leg itself or be referred from the low back.

The goal is to understand whether the pain is coming from a muscle or joint in the leg, from the hip or knee, or from a nerve being irritated in the low back.

Some people feel a dull ache or soreness after activity. Others notice burning, tingling, numbness, cramping or shooting pain that travels from the buttock or low back into the thigh, calf or foot. The pattern can help narrow down what may be involved.

A careful exam can help determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate and whether a lumbar disc or irritated nerve may make spinal decompression relevant.

What may be behind your leg pain?

These are common possibilities, not a diagnosis. Your exam helps narrow down what is most relevant to your symptoms.

01

Joint irritation

Muscle or tendon strain can cause localized leg pain after overuse, lifting, sports or a sudden increase in activity.

02

Muscle tension

Hip, knee or ankle joint problems can refer discomfort into nearby parts of the leg and change the way you walk.

03

Disc involvement

A lumbar disc problem can irritate a nerve root and create pain, tingling or numbness that travels down the leg.

04

Nerve irritation

Sciatic nerve irritation can create burning, shooting or electric-like pain through the buttock, thigh, calf or foot.

05

Movement limitations

Long sitting, repetitive lifting, running, deconditioning and altered walking mechanics can all influence leg symptoms.

06

Work + lifestyle stress

Because leg pain can come from muscles, joints, nerves or circulation, it is important to identify the likely source rather than assuming every symptom is sciatica.

Care Options

What kind of care may help?

Treatment depends on what your exam shows. We keep the plan focused on what makes sense for your presentation rather than automatically putting everyone through the same protocol.

Chiropractic Care

For joint motion, mobility and mechanical back pain.

Chiropractic care may be appropriate when leg pain is influenced by low-back or pelvic mechanics, restricted joint motion, muscle tension or nerve irritation. Care may include adjustments, mobility work and practical activity guidance based on the exam.

Spinal Decompression

More relevant when a lumbar disc or nerve is involved.

Spinal decompression may be considered when leg pain, tingling or numbness appears to be related to a lumbar disc problem or irritated nerve. It is not a treatment for every type of leg pain, so screening and examination matter.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Not a primary treatment for routine leg pain.

HBOT is not typically a first-line treatment for uncomplicated mechanical leg pain. It may be used for other medically appropriate indications, but it should not replace evaluation and treatment of the underlying muscle, joint, nerve or vascular issue.

Know When To Seek Medical Care

Some leg pain needs prompt medical evaluation.

Chiropractic care is not appropriate for every situation. Seek prompt medical attention if leg pain is accompanied by serious injury, rapidly progressing neurologic symptoms or signs of a possible circulation problem.

  • Severe pain or deformity after a fall or impact
  • New inability to bear weight or move the leg
  • One-sided swelling, redness or warmth in the calf
  • Leg pain with fever or unexplained illness
  • A cold, pale or blue foot
  • Progressive weakness, numbness or loss of bowel or bladder control

Leg Pain FAQ

A few common questions.

Chiropractic care may help some people with leg pain when low-back, pelvic or joint mechanics are contributing. The first step is determining whether the pain is local to the leg or being referred from the spine.

Spinal decompression may be considered when leg symptoms appear to be related to a lumbar disc problem or irritated nerve. It is not appropriate for every cause of leg pain.

Not everyone with leg pain needs imaging. Dr. Conner can determine whether X-rays, advanced imaging or referral may be appropriate based on your history, exam, neurologic findings and whether there was a significant injury.

Nerves that exit the low back travel into the hips and legs. When one of those nerve roots is irritated, pain, tingling, numbness or weakness can travel down the leg rather than staying only in the back.
