Hip Pain Basics

Not all hip pain has the same cause.

The goal is not simply to chase the painful spot. It is to understand how the hip, pelvis, low back, muscles and surrounding joints are working together.

Some people notice hip pain after sitting, walking, running, lifting or sleeping on one side. Others feel stiffness, pinching, aching or pain that travels into the groin, buttock or thigh. The location and movement pattern can help narrow down what may be contributing.

A careful exam can help determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate and whether symptoms may actually be related to the low back, pelvis or a disc or nerve problem.

Common Contributors

What may be behind your hip pain?

These are common possibilities, not a diagnosis. Your exam helps narrow down what is most relevant to your symptoms.

01

Joint irritation

Hip or pelvic joints can become stiff, irritated or move poorly after injury, repetitive stress or long periods in the same position.

02

Muscle tension

Muscles around the hip and pelvis may tighten or overwork when movement changes, activity increases or another area is not moving well.

03

Disc involvement

The hip joint itself can become irritated from overuse, reduced mobility, injury or age-related change, and that can affect walking and daily movement.

04

Nerve irritation

Pain that feels like it is coming from the hip can sometimes be referred from the low back, especially when a nerve or disc is involved.

05

Movement limitations

Reduced hip, pelvis or low-back mobility can change how the body handles load and may increase stress on surrounding tissues.

06

Work + lifestyle stress

Long sitting, repetitive lifting, running, uneven loading and deconditioning can all influence how the hip feels and functions.

Care Options

What kind of care may help?

Treatment depends on what your exam shows. We keep the plan focused on what makes sense for your presentation rather than automatically putting everyone through the same protocol.

Chiropractic Care

For joint motion, mobility and mechanical back pain.

Chiropractic care may be appropriate when hip pain is related to restricted joint motion, pelvic or low-back mechanics, muscle tension or movement patterns that are placing extra stress on the area. Care may include chiropractic adjustments, mobility work and practical activity guidance.

Spinal Decompression

More relevant when low-back discs or nerves are involved.

Spinal decompression may be considered when pain around the hip or buttock is actually related to a lumbar disc problem or irritated nerve, especially when symptoms travel down the leg. It is not a primary treatment for pain coming directly from the hip joint.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Not a primary treatment for routine hip pain.

HBOT is not typically a first-line treatment for uncomplicated mechanical hip pain. In some situations, a clinician may discuss HBOT for broader recovery goals or other appropriate medical indications, but it should not replace evaluation and treatment of the underlying cause of hip pain.

Know When To Seek Medical Care

Some hip pain needs prompt medical evaluation.

Chiropractic care is not appropriate for every situation. Seek prompt medical attention if hip pain is accompanied by serious or rapidly changing symptoms.

  • Inability to bear weight after an injury
  • Severe pain after a fall or major trauma
  • A visibly deformed hip or leg
  • Hip pain with fever, redness or significant swelling
  • Progressive numbness or weakness in the leg
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control with back, hip or leg symptoms

Hip Pain FAQ

A few common questions.

Chiropractic care may help some people with mechanical hip pain, especially when pelvic, hip or low-back mobility and movement patterns are contributing. The first step is determining whether your symptoms are appropriate for chiropractic care.

Spinal decompression is not usually used for pain coming directly from the hip joint. It may be relevant when pain in the hip or buttock is actually being referred from a lumbar disc or irritated nerve.

Not everyone with hip pain needs imaging. Dr. Conner can determine whether X-rays or another medical evaluation may be appropriate based on your history, exam and the nature of your symptoms.

Pain from the low back can sometimes be felt in the hip, buttock or leg, especially when a disc or nerve is involved. Your exam can help distinguish local hip pain from pain referred from the spine.
